The Öresund Committe

The goal of the Öresund Committee
As mentioned elsewhere, TheÖresund Committee was established in 1993 by the local and regional authorities, together with the national authorities, as the regional policy forum for the cross-border co-operation between Greater Copenhagen in Denmark and Scania in Sweden.

The goal of the committee is to strengthen and make the role of the region visible on national levels as well as internationally in order to create a foundation for increased economic, cultural and social growth in the region. The Öresund Committe should prepare a joint strategy, which aims at the promotion of a common development of the region. The Öresund Committee should on a day-to-day basis evaluate and put forward proposals for an appropriate development. The evaluation should create a foundation for joint marketing of the region.

A strong commitment to the European Community

The Öresund Committee is involved in several different projects initiated by the EU. Interreg II, a program operative from 1994 to 1999, was working to promote co-operation in the various border regions. In this connection, theÖresund Region´s potential for becoming one integrated region, consisting of the areas of Denmark and Sweden bordering on the Sound, was especially interesting.

The Öresund Committee is now drafting an INTERREG IIIA programme, which will become operational in the end of 2000.

All project work is undertaken with respect for the social and cultural identities represented in the region. All projects aim to create closer co-operation between people, companies and organisations across the Sound.
1 July 2000, the permanent link across the Sound between Denmark and Sweden was opened. The bridge makes it possible to live on one side of the Sound and work on the other - and to enjoy the nature, the cultural life and the increasingly integrated social services on both sides of the Sound. The Öresund Committee is dedicated to work for this future.
